EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES

YALE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT
New Haven, CT
G.C. – Dimeo Construction
Architect – Foster + Partners
Engineer – Buro Happold

YALE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT
Year Completed: 2013
Contract Amount: $15,232,000
Size: 350,000 sq. ft.
Project Features: This extraordinary world-class educational facility features a large auditorium as well as 16 classrooms and lecture halls ranging in size from 35 to 129 seats, all incorporating state-of-the-art technologies. The building also includes a food service area, multiple libraries, various conference rooms and office spaces, an underground parking garage, and a beautiful interior courtyard.
Challenges Faced: Careful logistical planning was crucial on this relatively tight job site within a congested urban location. Because the building itself encompassed the vast majority of space available, the result was a constricted construction area with limited site access, thereby requiring precise coordination and scheduling of deliveries. In the interior, complex HVAC and electrical systems were installed within extremely tight ceiling spaces, causing the 3D CAD/BIM effort to be quite challenging. Additional modeling challenges were met regarding critical layout and coordination of electrical infrastructure for classroom technologies seamlessly integrated into decorative architectural furnishings and casework.
Ducci Scope of Work: Installation of all lighting, fire alarm, security, and tele/data systems. Provided all permanent power service and infrastructure, as well as temporary service during construction.

State and local government agencies will utilize this facility for the purposes of law enforcement and disaster response training.
Ducci Scope of Work: Installed complete electrical for the entire facility, including: complete interior/exterior lighting with dimming and daylight harvesting capabilities, emergency generator, fire alarm, telecommunications, and data systems.

YALE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AMISTAD STREET BUILDING FIT-OUT
New Haven, CT
G.C. – Whiting-Turner Contracting Company
Architect – Ellenzweig Associates, Inc.
Engineer – Vanderweil Engineers, Inc.

YALE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AMISTAD STREET BUILDING FIT-OUT
Year Completed: 2007
Contract Amount: $3,483,000
Size: 120,000 sq. ft.
Project Features: Building includes a 30,000 sq. ft. vivarium, 4 floors at 20,000 sq. ft., and a 10,000 sq. ft. penthouse. This project received a LEED C1 Gold Rating. LEED Gold features include: accessibility to public transportation, unique materials used in construction and use of locally produced materials that have high recycled content, waste management, energy efficiency, bike racks and showers to encourage employees to leave their cars home, recycling of construction/demolition debris reducing the amount of waste by 70%, storm water collected from the roof and used in the ultralow flow lavatories and dual flush water toilets throughout the building as well as for irrigation to reduce the amount of water used, condensation from air handling units collected, cut potable water used by 80%, use of energy efficient light bulbs, use of occupancy sensors, use of light fixtures that bounce light off of highly reflective ceilings.
Challenges Faced: The project required intense coordination with shell contractor for schedule, MEP riser and main tie-ins, power distribution, and fire alarm.
Ducci Scope of Work: Performed interior renovation including state of the art laboratory and support space. Laboratories include biomedical research space, tissue culture rooms, cold rooms, specials labs, and a vivarium to house rodents. Stem cell research will also be performed in this building. The interior construction included removal of existing slab-on-grade to allow for installation of new column footings, under-slab utilities, and vapor barrier as well as additional steel columns throughout the building to remove vibration and add the lab space, etc.

YALE UNIVERSITY RUDOLPH BUILDING RENO./
NEW HISTORY OF ART BUILDING
New Haven, CT
G.C. – Turner Construction
Architect – Gwathmey Siegel & Associates
Engineer – Altieri Sebor Wieber, LLC

YALE UNIVERSITY RUDOLPH BUILDING RENO./ NEW HISTORY OF ART BUILDING
Year Completed: 2009
Contract Amount: $11,300,000
Size: 114,000 sq. ft. of existing space, 87,000 sq. ft. addition
Project Features: The new addition of the Jeffrey Loria Center for the History of Art served as a beautiful compliment to the Rudolph Building, originally constructed in 1963 and designed by Paul Rudolph, former Dean of Yale's Architecture School. Charles Gwathmey, lead designer of the new addition, was a student of Paul Rudolph at Yale in the 1960s. The entire package of custom light fixtures was a replica honoring Paul Rudolph's original design.
Ducci Scope of Work: Installed all normal/emergency electrical systems for entire facility, including medium voltage switchgear and transformers. Complete fire alarm system. State-of-the-art communication systems. Navigated all of the system raceways through a 9 story, 37 level building with (in some cases) ceilings no more than 6'4" tall. Gained access to areas with 3' thick, multi-level concrete walls and partitions. Installed modern systems and energy efficient technologies (which achieved LEED Gold Certification), while still maintaining the original design intent. Installed unique, specific, custom fixtures within the older, complex structure. Ducci won the confidence of Architects Gwathmey Siegel & Associates due to our attention to their design and detail.

YALE UNIVERSITY FORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
New Haven, CT
G.C. – Turner Construction
Architect – Hopkins Architects
Engineer – Ove Arup & Partners

YALE UNIVERSITY FORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
Year Completed: 2009
Contract Amount: $5,100,000
Size: 56,467 sq. ft.
Project Features: Interior space includes 50 faculty/staff offices, 3 classrooms, the 175 seat Burke Auditorium, the Ordway Learning Center, and the Knobloch Environment Center. This building achieved a LEED Platinum Rating, with features such as: 50% less energy consumption than conventional buildings (as per the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning), a 100KW photovoltaic array sized to generate ¼ of Kroon's electricity, a water recycling system projected to reduce potable water consumption by 75%, and (certified) sustainably harvested wood used in all paneling, trim, and roof decking. Half of the red oak paneling used was obtained from Yale-Myers, the school's forest in Connecticut.
Ducci Scope of Work: Installed multiple systems including lighting, power, security, tele/data, and photovoltaic on this tight site with extremely limited storage. All ceilings (and many concrete walls) were finished, so no exposed conduit/wiremold was permitted. Layout and placement of sleeves/device boxes, etc., was also critical. Installed the 102KW PV system on the south side of a 4+ story roof and all equipment associated with various electric closets.
